Best [Flymo] hover mower for your lawn this Summer 2021

This article was last updated on August 7th, 2021 at 5:32 am

Has the old Flymo packed up after years of dedicated service and it’s been so long you don’t know what the new models are like? Or are you just at your wits end with your lawn mowers failures, and the misery is compounded when you head round your families gaff, only to watch a ten year old Flymo pulled out of a dusty old shed still chugging along? Yeah, me too. That’s what made me re-visit all these Flymos, you just can’t beat them pound for pound. I don’t think my brother-in-law has sharpened his blades for a couple of years either and still gets the job done.

I settled for a Flymo Hover Vac 280 with collection box for the little strip of grass I have out the front, for a bigger lawn I go with a cordless Makita lawn mower. The power of these cordless grass cutting mowers would shock you! You’ll want a lightweight battery grass strimmer – I like the cordless ones to clean up the edges, and if you are really serious, a set of lawn edging shears provide the finishing touch!

Truthfully though, my little patch at the front is lumpier than I’d like. I promised myself this Summer 2020 lockdown I would level it out, cutting out the high points and laying new grass seed, but, that never came to fruition to this point, mainly because the Flymo hovers effortlessly over the bumps and almost smoothes out the overall look. So when I put this article together, I rated the Flymos based on ease of use, price, comfort, ability to pickup grass where collection box models, and ability to cut up to the verges.

Best hover mower

Finding the best hover mower is easy with our guide. We will start with the best cheap hover mower and work our way up to simply the best hover mower on the market today. Hopefully you’ll be able to find a hover mower for the right price that performs how you expect. The best hover mower should be powerful, well built, ergonomic by design, and well priced.

We’ve selected simply the best from Flymo to help you make the right decision with your hover lawn mower. Prices start from as little as £60 and amazingly provide top notch performance but not without a few niggly problems which we will discuss now.

The Flymo Turbo Lite 250 electric hover lawnmower needs little introduction from me and even less so because we have already thoroughly reviewed this as not only the best cheap hover mower in the uk, but also the best cheap electric lawn mower in the UK too on our best electric lawn mower review page.

Flymo Turbo Lite 250 Electric Hover Lawnmower: a brief recap: ‘powerful, efficient, value, and easy to use for less than the cost of a night out’

To recap, if you don’t want to switch between pages, this is a brilliant little mower that packs plenty of punch and bats well out of its weight range when compared to other brands. A 1400 watt motor for just £69.00 is incredible value for money.

Naturally when compared to other Flymo hover mowers, it falls into a high line of quality. If you’re simply looking for the cheapest flymo hover mower this works but there’s an important decision to be made here. For literally just an extra few quid, you can get a really handy grass collection box on the Flymo Hover Vac 280 Electric Hover Collect Lawn Mower which is the model up so to speak and not to be confused with exactly the same model with a collection box which is the Flymo Hover Vac 250 Electric Hover Collect Lawnmower. Not only that, it has a higher spec too which we will go into more detail shortly on it’s own review.

We could only pick two faults with and they are both reasonable credible: no grass collection and a few failures on first use. Let’s be fair though. Flymo are selling hundreds of thousands of these and of all my customers I am talking about a handful have had problems.

Here’s the same comparison table just for the sake of following my normal layout.

Flymo Turbo Lite 250 Electric Hover Lawnmower Review

Best Flymo Turbo Lite 250 Electric Hover Lawnmower Features

What needs work on the Flymo Turbo Lite 250 Electric Hover Lawnmower

Light as a butterfly whilst turned on I prefer a collection box
Very easy to operate Quality control should be more stringent
Very smooth to use
Surprisingly big cutting power
Very very well priced at £69.00
Good blade sharpness retention
Flymo after sales care
Reliable

Could they improve the Flymo Turbo Lite 250 Electric Hover Lawnmower?

Without being too repetitive, this lovely little hover mower is missing a grass collection box and Flymo could do more to stop the off dud leaving the factory. With the said, it’s tough to expect more from £69.00. They’ve really nailed it with their family friendly range of best cheap hover mowers.

Next up is the Flymo Hover Vac 280 electric hover lawn mower and quite frankly packed with a powerful 1300 Watt motor it probably offers slightly better value for money than the Flymo Hover Vac 280 Electric Hover Collect Lawn Mower. This is because it comes equipped with a grass collection box and has a 28cm cutting span as opposed to the 25cm span the Flymo Turbo Lite 250 offers.

Flymo Hover Vac 280 Electric Hover Collect Lawn Mower: ‘Grass collection box, excellent value, hugely powerful for its size and very comfortable to operate’

It’s considerably heavier as a result of the larger span and collection box at 8.8kg as opposed to the 5.5kg from the smaller model. Don’t let the weight put you off though. This thing literally glides when it’s powered up and is practically weightless and can be operated by any customer, from young to not quite so nimble. Just to confirm a quick answer to a common question:

Question: Does a Flymo hover mower really float?

Answer: Yes it literally floats when turned on and powered up!

Getting into the finer detail of the Flymo Hover Vac 280 electric hover lawn mower, it’s powerful engine cuts grass from a height of 10-30mm with a nice easy adjustment. Bear in mind though, this is a budget hover mower with the smallest of all engines. You won’t be able to attack extremely long grass and bulldoze your way through. The same applies to the grass being long and damp, the reality is this little mower will struggle.

If you accept the limitations based on what you’re willing to pay and use it accordingly, then you just can’t go wrong with this little mower. If I were to get picky I’d mention it can be a little difficult to pick up grass near verges. As with all hover mowers in this price range, the extension lead is 10m which I think on this model is pretty fair given it’s designed for small gardens mainly. If you find you need 25m power cords, you’re probably using the wrong mower for the job and spending far too much time. You would want to instead look at the Flymo Easi Glide 330VX Electric Hover Collect Lawn Mower, Flymo TurboLite 400 Electric Hover Lawn Mower, or if you want a cordless hover mower, I would take a look at the Flymo XL500 Petrol Hover Lawn Mower.

What needs work on the

Flymo Hover Vac 280 Electric Hover Collect Lawn Mower

Powerful motor A little light weight for medium sized gardens
Easy to use Difficult to pick up grass on the verges
Fairly lightweight
Perfect for small gardens

Ideal for older customers

Could they improve the Flymo Hover Vac 280 Electric Hover Collect Lawn Mower?

If I were to pick fault with this hover mower, I would say that a few do die unexpectedly and earlier. I do not point finger of blame at the design which is amazing for just £89.93. The quality control could be a little tighter and it would be great if there was a solution for picking up grass near verges and edges.

Let’s be clear though, when you sell literally tens of thousands of a product, a handful that fail are the ones I hear about, not the thousands of happy customers who don’t leave me a review. Overall this is a superb performing, reliable hover mower with a collection box.

The Flymo Hover Vac 250 electric hover lawn mower is another one of the great small hover mowers produced by Flymo. Again it’s incredible value for money but this time it really is the same model as the Flymo Turbo Lite 250 electric hover lawn mower but with the huge benefit of a grass collection box. While the grass collection box itself is only 15 litre capacity, this is ample for a little garden and it certainly beats raking up grass behind ourselves. It also compacts the grass which is handy if you’re short on space or using a compost bin.

Flymo Hover Vac 250 Electric Hover Collect Lawnmower: ‘All the performance of the Turbo Lite 250 but with added benefit of the grass collection box’

Just to point out this model is considerably heavier than it’s sister at 6.9kg as opposed to 5.5kg the Turbo Lite 250 weighs in at. This is absolutely not noticed at all though when in operation and if anything, I would say the additional weight is a slight bonus holding the machine down slightly more firmly and thus giving a slightly better cut. This is only anecdotal but I do believe it.

Talking of cutting, it has four steps from 11mm to 31mm which is perfectly fine for any normal lawn. Again if I were to draw on any small niggles, it would be the cord length though given how lightweight and small this hover mower is, I believe 10m is pretty reasonable. Like it’s sister it’s extremely ergonomic by design and makes for a very comfortable ride.

Some suggest the height adjusters that mean you need to remove the blades is a bit of a hassle. I think it takes no more than 1 minute to change blade height and is completely safe. It’s not a deal breaker nor a design fault to my mind.

Another nice touch is the ability to wall mount this hover mower. Many need to be paid flat, this one can be hung on the wall and save you plenty of space. If you were searching for a small hover mower due to space constraints, this would be the pick of the day.

Could they improve the Flymo Hover Vac 250 Electric Hover Collect Lawnmower?

The only flaw that I would point out because it’s been mentioned to me by clients is the adjustment height on the blades. You need to add an adjuster and that’ll raise the overall height by 20mm. It takes less than a minute to do and while it’s not as easy as lever you find on the side of rotary lawn mowers, it’s certainly by no means something that would put you off taking up all the other benefits of a hover lawn mower. For the price, it’s another one to add to your shortlist!

Flymo Hover Vac 250 Electric Hover Collect Lawnmower

One of the most popular in the Flymo range is the Flymo Easi Glide 330VX hover lawn mower. This little hover lawn mower is absolutely ideal for a medium sized garden. It has a very powerful 1400 Watt motor and a cutting span of 33cm making it one of the middle range models but at just , it’s easy to think that you’re getting a real bargain!

The 1400 Watt motor makes the 8.8kg weight seem almost ‘weightless’ in operation. A very nice mid range hover lawn mower that will collect grass!

Flymo Easi Glide 330VX Electric Hover Collect Lawn Mower: Great power, good on medium sized gardens, easy storage, and a nice grass 20l collection box’

One thing that’s super handy on this Flymo is the ability to fold the handle back over the front of itself, allowing for a really comfortable carry position as well as compact storage, making it ideal if you are short on space. It has a decent 20 litre grass collection box. I would be quick to point out that if you mow right up to concrete or pathways you will almost certainly end up with a little sweeping up.

Also, it won’t go quite up to the edges so you’ll have a little tidying in after, but that’s what Flymo grass trimmers are designed for! It also comes with a see through grass collection box enabling you to know when the box has filled up. On the note of grass box, this model compacts grass very nicely and as an added bonus picks up leaves and other debris too!

The Flymo Easi Glide 330VX hover lawn mower is for my money the right balance of size and power for a medium sized garden. If you use a Flymo smaller than this with a 40ft plus garden, you’ll find yourself working too hard. This machine will make quick and light work of a garden that’s 40ft-80ft or so. I would suggest at the upper range you might consider a slightly different option though. For less money you can get the Flymo TurboLite 400 Electric Hover Lawn Mower, and sure it doesn’t have a collection box but you get a bigger cut which will save a considerable amount of time! This model though is lovely on size and very easy to operate and carry.

It’s suitable for any gardener and very minimal effort is required to operate it. Being that it will just hover over the grass when in use, the weight and freedom of movement is perfect. I would say that the 12m power cord is standard, but the ability of this machine is considerably more and having a power extension lead on hand would be useful.

To adjust the height of cut is quite simple, it’s the standard system that involves adding or removing spacers to adjust the height of the cut. On the height of cut, I have had feedback that this thing needs repetitive mowing of the same area to make a cut. When I questioned how old the machine was, the response was 2 years.

The next question of course was how big is the garden and have you ever sharpened or replaced the blades? Well, you know the answer already, big garden, and no maintenance! Please bear in mind when buying any hover lawn mower, or any mower for that matter, the blades will need attention every so often. It’s already handy enough that the Flymo electric range is practically zero maintenance on the engine which is just brilliant as it is!

What needs work on the Flymo Easi Glide 330VX Electric Hover Collect Lawn Mower

Ideal for less able customers

Could they improve the Flymo Easi Glide 330VX Electric Hover Collect Lawn Mower?

Normally my answer is no when it comes to Flymo improvements as they are already absolutely on the nail in terms of over delivering for the price paid. With this model though, ehe Flymo Easi Glide 330VX hover lawn mower should probably pick up grass a little better than it does. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good, but when compared price wise to the lower models I’d just like an extra 10% or so more grass collection power.

I’m probably being over fussy but I like to mention it. As with all larger Flymo hover lawn mowers, my major gripe is the power cord length. This hover lawn mower easily has the ability to handle a 60ft garden yet the cord reaches out just 36ft. Would it be possible for them to offer a secondary model, or any model for that matter with a 20m power lead? It would be hugely popular I’m sure! Overall though, for the price paid, it’s easy to see why the The Flymo Easi Glide 330VX hover lawn mower is a top top seller and one of the most popular electric lawn mowers!

5. Flymo TurboLite 400 Electric Hover Lawn Mower

When considering the Flymo TurboLite 400 electric hover lawn mower, there’s a few specific criteria that if matched make this the perfect choice. The question is quite simple: do you want a hugely powerful lawn mower, with a large cutting span capable of dealing with mid to large gardens for less than the price of a mid range Flymo like the Flymo Easi Glide 330VX Electric Hover Collect Lawn Mower, and you don’t mind raking up after?

If you want pure value for money on a mid-sized garden and up, the Flymo TurboLite 400 electric hover lawn mower is the go to lawn mower.

Flymo TurboLite 400 Electric Hover Lawn Mower: ‘Very powerful, handles mid-sized gardens with ease, light weight, and incredible value for money’

The Flymo TurboLite 400 electric hover lawn mower has a 40cm cutting span, weighs just 7.8kg due to not having a collection box, a whopping 1500 Watt motor, and a 15-41mm cutting range.

This makes the Flymo TurboLite 400 electric hover lawn mower the best performer of all hover lawn mowers, pound for pound on a mid-sized garden, probably in the whole of the UK. What I like the most about this model is just how small it is for the power it provides. It’s a wall hung mower that will handle a large garden. Sometimes I question how Flymo do it.

It comes with a 12m power cord, and I know I gripe about it in almost every review but it’s reasonable enough to mention that this hover lawn mower will cut an 80ft garden with ease, why not then provide an 80ft power cord. We as the customer would certainly be willing to pay for it! I will say this though, an 80ft power cord would be rather cumbersome and difficult to put away so there are merits against it.

Also not that it’s really a negative but I’ll point it out, the handle needs a little assembly, a minute or two at most. Apart from that it’s hard to find fault. 99.9% of people that buy this lawn mower from me are more than happy with the performance. The odd dud from the manufacturer needs replacing now and again, you would have to be one of those unlucky people to get caught though!

If you don’t mind a rake up after, and you want value, there really is no other better alternative. At just , I’m often left scratching my head how they do it. It’s not just the price of the mower to consider here. Flymo offer excellent customer service too. As part of the overall deal you can’t lose with a Flymo hover mower.

Could they improve the Flymo TurboLite 400 Electric Hover Lawn Mower?

For the price you pay it’s a bit cheeky to say you need a longer power cord, but if they upped the price a few quid and gave me an extra 5m of power lead, I would be their first customer.

Overall it is practically impossible to fault a lawn mower that costs , cuts a large garden, and weighs only 7.8kg, then while stored can be wall mounted. Flymo really nailed it with this model when it comes to value for money, it’s practically unbeatable in the hover mower range.

Do you want a cordless hover mower that cuts grass efficiently on slopes, inclines, or uneven ground? Are you in love with hover mowers but want more freedom and have a large garden? Do you let the grass get a bit long occasionally? Following on from the long grass, do you find yourself cutting in the wet? Do you want a petrol powered lawn mower with the manoeuvrability and ease of use you can only normally get from an electric hover mower?

If you answered yes to all of those then there’s probably no need to read the review unless you want to hear about a couple of trivial niggles, buy the Flymo XL500 petrol hover lawn mower and be happy for years to come. If you answer yes to some read on…to learn mower about this unique petrol hover mower

Flymo XL500 Petrol Hover Lawn Mower: ‘cordless hover mower, unbelievable cutting power, light weight to operate, cuts grass wet, huge cut span’

The Flymo XL500 petrol hover lawn mower offers a 50cm cut span, decimates long grass and thick patches, offers a 10-40mm cut range, and is basically designed for large gardens or professionals and really comes into its own on a slope or incline.

Where the Flymo XL500 petrol hover lawn mower really scores though, is cutting on slopes. It handles slopes and banks as steep as 45 degrees with ease and unlike a rotary lawn mower, will not run away from you. Flymo solved a real problem with this model.

What can I say, it performs brilliantly. It cuts effortlessly, it’s designed with anti corrosion on mind for long lasting performance. If I can find fault with this petrol hover mower, it would be the noise you get from a petrol engine.

Let’s be clear though, this is a high quality four stroke Honda engine, not some tinny sounding 2 stroke from China this is a high quality petrol hover mower. It’s vastly quieter than some of those things. Being a petrol you always question the start. With full decompression it will go on the pull start first or second time no problem. You won’t find yourself pulling away, getting frustrated! Also more an advisory than a problem, make sure you read the warning. If you pick it up the wrong way you run the risk of flooding the air filter with petrol. It can happen so be careful with that.

You might consider this thing weighs 18.2kg so keep it close to the lawn to save on energy lugging it around. The other thing is the price I suppose. At , it’s up there. But I wouldn’t call it bad value for money, far from. It’s a small price to pay for the job this cordless hover mower will do.

It’s actually one of the best-value for money hover mowers on the market in terms or performance and the job it can do. Cutting on slopes and inclines is a doddle with this cordless hover mower.

It is the only cordless hover mower worth reviewing in my mind. There’s not a comparable worth talking about, in fact I can’t even think of another cordless hover mower or petrol hover mower for that matter, as I write this! Flymo have really filled a gap in the market here.

Cuts slopes and inclines with ease 18.2 kg
Only cordless hover mower Noisy for a hover mower
Petrol engine
Huge power
Easily cuts any length grass

Starts easily
Clear operating and lifting instructions
No power cord

Could they improve the Flymo XL500 Petrol Hover Lawn Mower?

No. I don’t know what else to say. Put a bigger engine on it and it will become unmanageable, put a smaller, it will lose the brute power it has, it’s very well balanced considering the weight of it. I listed the weight as a problem. I am clutching at straws to find fault with this unique, one of a kind cordless hover mower.

You might argue that as hover mowers go, it’s noisy being petrol. You might argue the weight but both are countered in an instant. You have no annoying power cord and it has unrivalled power. If you have a large garden or piece of land on a slope, incline, or the ground isn’t even, this hover mower is unrivalled in ability.

The Flymo Easi Glide 300 comes with a 20 litre collection box that’s ample in size when compared to it’s frame and cutting ability. Weighing only 8.5kg, when this thing is in full swing it’ll zip over your lawn and so light weight that you’ll barely notice any resistance at all on a level surface, and it’s exceptionally good on lumpy lawns too.

It’s got a decent 1300 Watt motor, the same one that powers my favoured 280 model, but the difference being, it’s got a 30cm diameter cut. So if you have a small to mid sized bit of grass, say up to 30ft, this would be absolutely ideal to keep the lawn at bay once a week during the Summer. Should you keep up the maintenance at a steady rate, you’ll zip over 30ft lawn in about half hour to 45 minutes. Or so. When I tested it, I noticed I had a bit of raking up after. No big deal, but great performance as you expect from all Flymos.

There’s more good news! It comes fully assembled with a fold down arm, so stacks away in the shed nicely with no fuss, it’ll even hang on the wall if you have somewhere safe to do so. I found the overall height of 1.4m pretty good to use, I am about 5 foot 10” so if you’re tall, it may mean a little leaning over. That’s something worth considering.

It cuts from 10mm up to 30mm depths, truthfully, with my ground being uneven I go for the highest setting. I would scalp my lawn in patches otherwise. The cable is ideal in length, if you need an extension, you probably want a bigger model. Overall, I feel they designed this one above their usual high standard.

Flymo Easi Glide 300 Electric Hover Collect Lawn Mower

Why Flymo THE hover mower?

Sometimes I wonder if not for Flymo, would we have a hover mower? They have single handedly made the hover mower as popular as it is today. Sure you get variants but I wouldn’t dream of buying anything but a Flymo hover mower. Think about it, decades of testing and dedicated craftsmanship all rolled into a cheap hover mower package, of which is surprisingly high quality and represents excellent value for money.

You have to wonder did Flymo benefit from better times? The amount of testing, development, and effort that has gone into making an incredibly high quality hover mower for such a reasonable price would be hard pressed to be replicated today. We are benefitting from a company that has existed for decades offering high quality sales and aftercare for just as long.

When you break it down Flymo represent the small to mid garden market which is most of us and they’ve consistently been doing it better than everyone else and so, that’s why my hover mower review is Flymo only.

Petrol hover mower

Flymo have the distinction of being the only petrol hover mower manufacturers that I know of. I am more than willing to concede the point if someone can prove otherwise but to my knowledge, they are in a league of their own here with the Flymo XL500 Petrol Hover Lawn Mower. A petrol hover mower does an amazing job on slopes and inclines and while having the distinction of being the only petrol hover mower, it also is the only cordless hover mower too. At this point in time battery technology prohibits electric cordless hover mowers.

It doesn’t work in the same way a rotary mower would. Because it hovers, it doesn’t run away from you downhill. Uphill isn’t such a battle for some other petrol mowers because they ‘self drive’, but downhill they will get away from you which is both hard work and potentially dangerous.

This makes the petrol hover mower both unique and highly efficient, solving a real problem and is ideal for professional use due to it’s huge engine power and performance. Overall, a petrol hover mower makes a lot of sense.

Cordless hover mower

In the same breathe as the petrol hover mower is unique, so is the cordless hover mower and I believe the Flymo XL500 Petrol Hover Lawn Mower is the only cordless hover mower. As I previously mentioned, battery technology and power is yet to catch up and Flymo hover mowers in general rely on huge power. The smallest being around 1100 Watts, this would mean you need a 60 volt, 20 amp setup. The only people even close to that from my knowledge are makita with their cordless rotary lawn mower. That is not a cordless hover mower though.

The cordless hover mower works great on inclines and has all the same benefits as those listed on the petrol hover mower because they are one and the same. The Flymo XL500 Petrol Hover Lawn Mower truly is a unique hover mower and until such a time as we move to the next level with battery power, I can see this remaining unique. It would be both insane and brash to try to move into a market that a company like Flymo dominate with quality and amazing after sales care.

Small hover mower

We’ve already reviewed the Flymo Turbo Lite 250 electric hover lawn mower and I don’t want to give that the title of the best small hover mower as well as the cheapest and though it probably is, it’s twin sister with a collection box, the Flymo Hover Vac 250 electric hover collect lawn mower is pretty small too, and a great piece of kit. So for a small hover mower, I really think we should take a look here first.

Though jokes aside, either of these cracking small hover mowers work wonders and will look after a small garden more than competently. Factor in the price and you’re onto a real winner and will not be disappointed with the performance of either. I just favour the collection box model, simply due to the ease of use and I hate raking up grass after cutting, knowing a better machine would of done the job for me.

Cheap hover mower

When I think cheap hover mower there’s only one that strikes me as the best cheap hover mower: the Flymo Turbo Lite 250 Electric Hover Lawnmower. This little beauty is the cheapest Flymo hover mower in the UK and packs tons of performance for the money.

A cheap hover mower doesn’t mean cutting your standards though. Far from it. If you have a little garden and a small project, say anything up to 40ft, a cheap hover mower will really look after you. Bear in mind there’s cheap and there’s cheap but good value with good performance. The cheap hover mower is excellent value and will not let you down for either power or performance. They are extremely reliable too and occasionally need a blade change.

Flymo Hover Mower Summary

Flymo are producing some of the most functional lawn mowers in the UK, let alone the hover mower range which they are completely dictating. So much so. When I write about the hover mower, I even title the page [Flymo]. They are all so quality and value for money that they all range a good 4 to 5 out of 5 from thousands of reviews, you just can’t go wrong with a Flymo. I hope you’ve enjoyed my thorough review of these mowers for Summer 2020 and hope that you find the right one for your garden in this review.
