Description
An original pencil sketch by John Irvine of a view of Lerwick Harbour looking north.
Seven Dutch Herring Busses in the bay with the two-masted Schooner 'Matchless' in her usual moorings. The Matchless was built in 1846 for the Zetland New Shipping Company, the last sailing vessel specially built to serve the islands as a mail-passenger vessel. The Matchless was one of the most successful and reliable sailing ships trading between Lerwick and Leith remaining in service until 1882 despite competition of steam and her record of 24 hours from Lerwick to Leith has never been broken by a sailing vessel.
